What happens when you create a data source in Hyperion Planning Administration

In this blog, I would be talking about what happens when we create a data source in the Planning Administration in EPM…

The below snapshots shows the Data source called HYPPLAN2 being created…

Now, the data source has been created successfully as shown in the above snapshot. Since it is not tagged to any Planning application, the application name column is blank.
Also, note that there is an Hyperion Planning application called “EXPREP” tagged to data source HypPlan in the above snapshot…

Now, the information of the schemas is stored in a table called as HSPSYS_DATASOURCE in the schema that was configured for the Planning administration…

In my case, this schema is called as HYP_PLAN and the contents of the HSPSYS_DATASOURCE table is as shown in the below snapshot.

Observe that the Hypplan data source has an APP_ID value of 1 whereas the newly created data source HYPPLAN2 has an APP_ID value of -1…

If the APP_ID value in the HSPSYS_DATASOURCE table is -1, it indicates that no Planning application is tagged to the data source and can be used for creating a Planning application.
