Uninstalling Hyperion EPM - Restoring order to the universe

Well, a lot of blogs are said about how to install Hyperion EPM. In this blog, I will try to restore some order to the universe (ah… the phrase of the revolutionaries…Should really get a picture of mine in the Wild, Wild, West getup to accompany this blog), and show how to uninstall Hyperion EPM from a server where it has been installed.

Please note that, uninstalling EPM can be done in a variety of ways. You can format the EPM installation hard disk which would be equivalent to nuking away your problem or you can use the uninstall jar file which is equivalent to a tactical drone strike…Precise and focused.

Disclaimer: - All stunts in this blog have been performed on a non-production environment. This must not be replicated on production environment unless under adult supervision and with all approvals in place.

The uninstall files are usually present at the following path as shown in the below snapshot:-
{EPM Middleware path}\EPMSystem11R1\uninstall

Run the uninstall.cmd batch file to run the uninstall EPM utility.

The utility would then ask specific components that you may want to uninstall from the EPM installation. For the demo purpose, I am planning to uninstall everything.

On clicking “Next” in the above snapshot, a popup comes asking if you are sure and would want to continue. If you are sure, click yes. Now you are one step closer to the point of no return.

The next screen will give a list of all the components that would be uninstalled by the utility.

A note on the order of uninstall. If you see the order, the uninstall happens from bottom to top i.e FDMEE would be uninstalled first followed by Financial Management SDK and so on. The order on uninstall is similar to the order in which services should be stopped if we are doing it manually. And the reverse order indicates the order in which services must be started if we are starting the processes manually.

The next couple of snapshots in the uninstall is as follows:-

Finally, EPM uninstallation has been completed successfully as shown in the above snapshot. You can click on the Finish button to exit the uninstaller.

Do note that, the uninstaller will not delete the Middleware files. They would need to be manually deleted as shown in the below snapshot.

Now, it is advised to stop all the services before running the uninstall. If all services are stopped, the Middleware folder can be deleted as is after the uninstaller finishes. Otherwise, it may give an error saying that some files are being used by another application.

If this is the case, the following two are the services that are the culprit.
  • ·         Oracle Process Manager
  • ·         Oracle EPM Instance name.

To fix this, you may need to manually stop the services or restart the machine once. After that, Middleware folder can be deleted as is.
